Indicators of Revolution in North Africa
I have several ideas on how to follow the revolutions sweeping North Africa.
Al Jazeera
Their english service is the best form of news. I watch it online for hours.

Intrade.com
A prediction market which has markets on whether the presidents of Libya, Bahrain, Iran, Algeria, and Yemen will still be in office at the end of 2011. Within the past 24 hours Gadhafi has gone from a 40% to 88% chance of losing office.
Twitter
Hard to tell what is going on, but you can search for a country's name or use "countryname + protest".
Key Variables
Some variables that help predict revolution. You could do a linear regression on them. If you take 5-15 countries you won't have a large enough sample size. However, if you treat each day as a case then you could do a regression on the variables that are changing every day (ex. number of protesters).
-Protests - number of them, size.
-Media coverage - ideally protesters want live tv coverage (ex. Tahrir square in Egypt) to avoid massacres
-stance of police/military (pro/con/neutral)
-how narrow is the support level of the regime?
-internet on/off
-mobile phones on/off
-land lines on/off
-number of arrests, injuries, and deaths
-tweets - number of them, and level of optimism
-general (if the government doesn't cut it off) access to internet, and mobile phones
-search trends - see how Google did its Flutrends to discover flu outbreaks based on what people searched for.
-per capita income
-percent of youth population
-length of leadership in power (should increase stability, but might actually not be significant)
-age of leadership (should be a negative factor - a lot of the long-term leaders, who are otherwise firmly in power, might fall because they are too old and stuck in their ways)
-shared cultural traits with other countries revolting (religion, language, ethnicity)
-% population that watches Al-Jazeera
One could possibly write an algorithm to identify events before the mainstream media (by analyzing twitter and/or google search). For instance, detecting a massacre or the departure of a leader. You could also write an algorithm to verify/debunk rumors (twitter is full of "leader x" has left the country - currently it is Gadhafi has gone to Venezuela).
