Notre Dame Living Wage Campaign - Questions for the President
Notre Dame activists are working for a living wage on campus. This is the latest news. Haven't heard what the outcome is yet.
Campus Labor Action Project- Meeting with President's Office Tuesday- October
11th- Spread the word
September 29th we announced five questions for Fr Jenkins- below.
October 11th- TUESDAY, WE WILL GET HIS ANSWERS!!!
MEET AT GOD QUAD AT 1:15 near the Jesus statue to rally with CLAP reps and hear
the results of the meeting at 2:15 in front of the Main Building with press.
We need a strong presence of CLAP members and allies to show Fr. Jenkins we care
about this issue.
1) Will you President Jenkins release a full report of wages and benefits to
Campus Labor Action Project and Student Government University Affairs
Committee?
2) Outsourcing jobs almost always leads to lower pay. While we gather
statistics at our campus will you President Jenkins commit to a moratorium on
outsourcing during your first year?
3) The Catholic Church is a leading voice for living wages for all workers.
President Jenkins, will you publicly commit to the principle of a living wage?
4) To show your support for Catholic teachings on livable wages will you commit
to work with students, workers, faculty, alumni, and community members to
establish a living wage policy for Notre Dame this year?
5) Will you commit to meet personally with our coalition of students, faculty,
workers, and community members this semester?
My Guessed Responses (and possible university arguments)
1) No. The university HATES releasing information. They might quote a couple sample figures.
2) No, outsourcing is an essential part of responsible university administration.
3) Yes
4) No, at least in the sense that he'll want longer than a year to develop the policy. He might make it sound like he is agreeing by saying he'll start working on it. Agreeing to a living wage is the easier part. The battle is going to be over defining it.
5) Yes he'll meet (at least once, getting repeated meetings would be harder). He might also create a committee that will side-line the student activists and workers. Eg. a committee that would include student government leaders, but not student activists.

Jenkins Responds
1) No
2) No
3) No
4) No
5) No
I think it's interesting that he isn't declaring himself in favor of a living wage. Note: after several years of being a ND student activist - I did a bad job of predicting the outcome. Administration psychology is tough!
