New SEAC Website
Submitted by akreider on Fri, 09/05/2008 - 20:30.The Student Environmental Action Coalition has a new website.
I've worked on the website from 2001-2007, and before retiring, I transitioned the content over to a content management system (Drupal). So I'm glad to see that they are able to figure out the Drupal system and improve upon it!

Mapping Power Plants
Submitted by akreider on Tue, 09/02/2008 - 14:41.You can see a beta version of the site I've been working on since January:
The mapping is especially fast if you use the newly released Google browser Chrome
(For a map with a large number of markers, it is approximately five times faster than Firefox - which is an insane improvement!)
We're mapping around 10,000 power plants, primarily in the US, for the Energy Justice Network which is part of the Energy Action Coalition (a large coalition of anti-global warming groups).
Principles for an Online Activist Grassroots Revolution
Submitted by akreider on Mon, 09/01/2008 - 16:57.I originally wrote this in 2004, but never published it anywhere. Here it is with some small edits.
“Information wants to be free.”

“Activist information wants to be free too.”

The Case Against David Freddoso: Author of The Case Against Obama
Submitted by akreider on Fri, 08/22/2008 - 14:44.I haven’t read the book. But I went to Notre Dame with David Freddoso, author of best-selling “The Case Against Barack Obama” and felt I should relate my experiences. During that time in school, I was a progressive leader on campus and he belonged to a group of conservatives who were trying not just to oppose our goals (which would be understandable), but also to shut our organizations down. The main targets of the attacks were the Women’s Resource Center, the Progressive Student Alliance, and the unrecognized LGB student group.
Software Defined Radio - open source radio project
Submitted by akreider on Tue, 08/19/2008 - 20:42.An open source radio project to create a software defined radio. Both the hardware (electrical design) and software are open source, and they have a community of people developing it:

Software defined radios are amazing. You can record spectrum and do more. I'm wondering if I should buy one, or hold out as they keep getting better.

Transfering Domains from Yahoo to GoDaddy
Submitted by akreider on Tue, 08/12/2008 - 18:01.So GoDaddy is a rightwing company that you shouldn't support, but at least they are easier to deal with then some others and they're very stable which is critical in domain world. You just don't want to lose a domain and have to buy it back for $1000.
That said here is how to transfer domains from Yahoo to GoDaddy and save $25/domain per year.
1. Login to both accounts - Godaddy, and Yahoo (Small Business - Domains - Domain Manager).
Possible Origins of a Major Third Progressive Political Party in the US
Submitted by akreider on Mon, 08/04/2008 - 23:25.Here are a couple possible causes for how a major progresive political party could develop in the US.
It will probably take several of them.
1. The death of the Democrats.
Mapping Walmarts and Groups Opposing Them
Submitted by akreider on Thu, 07/31/2008 - 00:39.Walmart Watch just came out with a
map of Walmarts.
You can find new stores or old stores. You can find stores near you. You can find stores that have been stopped. Users can update information about the store.
I like it because it's very similar to what the Energy Justice Network is going to be doing with our power plants map site. You can find power plants (instead of stores), update their information, find groups or start your own group to oppose them, and share resources (files).

Let House Prices Plummet
Submitted by akreider on Tue, 07/29/2008 - 17:51.The corporate media shows its bias, as do most economists and politicians, by arguing that the current housing price decline is bad.
It's bad for people who own homes, and especially bad for people whose houses are being foreclosed, but it's good news for the MANY people who rent or who expect to buy a home in the future.
Yahoo Increases Domain Registration Cost by 250%
Submitted by akreider on Mon, 07/14/2008 - 16:51.Yahoo is evil. They are increasing domain registration cost from $10 to $35.
I just got an email that didn't even use words like "increase". Just "keep enjoying your service" (they used those words) while your domain registration cost soars.
Bad move. Hopefully they'll be pressured by webmasters to not do it. Most everyone else charges $10 for domains. I could understand $10-$12, but $35 is crazy.
